School garden data

How many California districts have a school garden, how many use it for education, and where the gaps are. The 2024 district-level analysis by the Ten Strands data initiative is the evidence behind our case.

What the 2024 data shows

  • About 50% of California's school districts (475 districts) show evidence of a school garden.
  • 322 districts, about 34%, show evidence of some kind of education that may use a school garden.
  • About 30% (281 districts) show evidence of garden-based education.
  • About 14% (133 districts) show evidence of food systems education.
  • About 9.8% (92 districts) show evidence of both garden-based and food systems education.
  • About 32% of districts with gardens are either not using them for education or not saying so publicly.
  • 90 districts, around 10% of all districts and 20% of those with gardens, have a dedicated garden coordinator at the district or site level. Coordinator roles held by parent or teacher volunteers would not appear as staff positions, so the true number is likely higher.

The analysis counts districts, not schools, and only what is public, so the real numbers are likely higher. If your district's data is wrong, tell us with the form below.
